Autumn Activities in Mossley!
Summer is almost over and autumn is almost upon us! The sun shines a little less (if that's even possible!), and the nights start to roll in a little sooner, however there's still time to venture outside and enjoy what the English countryside has to offer. With the change of the seasons in mind, we've got a selection of outdoor, and a few indoor, autumn activities for you to enjoy in Mossley!
Micklehurst Loop

This former railway line offers a scenic journey through the heart of Mossley’s countryside. As you navigate the loop, you’ll be surrounded by trees and woodland areas, with several sub-trails for you to explore and immerse yourself further. The path is relatively flat, making it accessible for all ages and fitness levels. Along the way, there's a good chance you'll spot some local wildlife. Exploring the Micklehurst Loop during autumn is a fantastic way to appreciate Mossley’s natural beauty and enjoy the season's crisp air.
Need to know: Start the loop in Mossley at Station Road, Mossley OL5 0AA and follow the track around. This historic hilltop tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding area, especially stunning during the autumn months when the landscape is blanketed in rich, warm colours. The hike to the top is moderately challenging, but the reward is well worth the effort. As you ascend, take in the greenery and the emerging yellow and browns of autumn, with the expansive views across the Pennines. On a clear autumn day, you can see as far as Manchester and beyond. Hartshead Pike is not only a fantastic spot for photography but also a great place to relax and enjoy the autumn air in Mossley.
Need to know: Use the postcode OL5 0JL and approach by Broadcarr Lane or Lanehead Road, where there’s parking available. The climb to the tower is fairly easy and can be complete easily in under an hour.
Cowbury Woodlands & Reservoir
5 minutes outside of Mossley is Cowbury Dale, an ideal location for a picnic, a stroll through the woodlands or a dip in the nearby reservoir. There's plenty to keep animal lovers happy, with sheep, pigs, chickens and goats all on display on the way to the woodlands. There are some flat grassy patches too which make for great areas for ball games and other family activities, and let's not forget the little guys either! A selection of birds, insects and general creepy crawlies inhabit the area, and can be a real treat for nature lovers and that's before you arrive at the reservoir, which houses geese. It makes a great spot for a wild swim, though make sure you're accompanied at all times and it's best not to get too close to the geese!
