Shaw is a village with a close-knit community that’s close to Manchester and Oldham. It boasts brilliant transport links to surrounding areas, and is also on the doorstep of some of the UK’s most stunning countryside.
Things to do
High Crompton Park is a fantastic place to spend a day in the great outdoors, and features a fantastic playground, a bowling green, ornamental gardens, a football area and picnic benches where you can enjoy an al fresco lunch or picnic. It also hosts an annual country fair every September.
Crompton Moor is close to Shaw too, a stunning area of moorland that’s fantastic for walking and wildlife spotting.

Bobby Ball, the British comic, actor, singer and television host who’s best known as a member of the comic double act, Cannon and Ball, was from Shaw.

Transport
Shaw boats its own Metro Link, providing easy access into Manchester. It also has a good selection of bus routes to Oldham and other surrounding towns and villages, and is just a few minutes away from the M62, which provides good access to the rest of the UK’s motorway network.
History
Shaw was a major textile producer during the industrial revolution and was dominated by 48 huge cotton mills. This created an economic boom, and it was reported that Shaw had more millionaires per capita than any other town in the world. Since deindustrialisation, it has expanded rapidly due to new housing developments and the redevelopment of existing properties.

For excellent food and drink, head to one of Shaw’s many pubs. If you’re after delicious home cooked grub and a large selection of ales, wines and spirits, check out The North Star, The Morning Star or Park Inn. There’s also Shay Wake, a Wetherspoon’s pub that serves up good-value food and drinks.

Shaw has a good selection of supermarkets, including an Aldi, an Asda Superstore and a Tesco Express. There are also several fantastic charity shops, beauty salons and hairdressers on its high street.
