Things to Do

Set in the Yorkshire countryside it’s no surprise that Holmfirth is stunning all year round, head for the hills if you want a panoramic view. For those that would prefer a shorter walk, Digley Reservoir is a walk alongside woodlands and is ideal for families. Don’t forget to stop off at The Fleece Inn in Holme village for a pie and a pint. For a more accessible linear route head to Holme Valley Riverside, this six-mile trail goes through Holmfirth and Honley.

Last of the Summer Wine was filmed in Holmfirth and is the longest-running sitcom in Britain. If you are a fan, come and have your photo taken outside Nora Batty’s house or have a cup of tea in Sid’s café.

The Picturedrome, formally a cinema, now plays host to many artists including Belinda Carlisle, Bastille, Sophie Ellis Bexter and Scouting for Girls.

Transport

There is good access to both the M1 & M62 making it easy to commute to Manchester, Leeds or Sheffield. The nearest train station is Brockholes which runs between Sheffield and Huddersfield.

History

After the industrial revolution, the population boomed, and the town became a commercial centre due to its booming textile industry. Many people living in Holmfirth made a living from the textile trade from the 18th century to the 20th century. The Last Summer Wine television programme was filmed in Holmfirth. The success saw the town become a tourist attraction.

Eating & Drinking

Holmfirth is well known for its nightlife, with a large number of independent bars and restaurants on offer. Particular favourites for real ale drinkers are The Nook, Magic Rock & O’Briens Bottle Shop whilst cocktails can be enjoyed at The Hideout and The Winking Stag & Oscars.

For a friendly welcome and a pint by an open fire, head to The Elephant & Castle. Lou and Joe's offers mouth-watering burgers. Cave offers a lovely brunch menu, to set you up ready for a big walk in the countryside.

Shopping

We have an Aldi, Lidl, Co-op and Sainsburys local for all your grocery needs. Every Thursday there is an indoor market with the occasional craft and art market. We have a selection of independent shops perfect for small unique gifts, head to Nellie's Workshop or Fair Trader.
