Things to do in Glossop

Often referred to as a gateway to the Peak District, there are several famous walking trails that can be accessed directly from Glossop’s doorstep, so if you’re a fan of trekking, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Within Glossop itself lies Manor Park, a beautiful, 60-acre green space that boasts a seasonal miniature railway, lake, café and children’s playground. There’s Howard’s Park too, which is also home to the Victorian baths building where Glossop pool sits.

For an evening out, head to Partington Theatre in the heart of the town, which stages plays and musical performances, and has its own lively social club.

History

Glossop became a cotton producing hub in the 19th century, and was run by cotton entrepreneurs who transformed the fortunes of the town and built several stunning Victorian buildings and cotton mills. This is why the town benefits from such fantastic architecture, and several old cotton mills have now been repurposed into pubs, hotels and shops.

Transport

Well connected to nearby towns and cities by road, Glossop also has its own train station.

Trains link the town to all surrounding towns and villages, and there’s also regular services, via neighbouring towns, to Manchester Piccadilly, which all take less than half an hour. Regular bus services connect Glossop to surrounding towns too, including Ashton-Under-Lyne, Hyde, Buxton and Stockport.

Shopping

From independent gift and book shops to big name supermarkets like Tesco and Aldi, you can easily while away a few hours browsing the town’s interesting mix of shops.

From traditional pub grub to Asian small plates and vegetarian delights, Glossop is a food lovers’ mecca packed full of delicious eateries. Try the Globe Pub for delicious vegan dishes, The Oakwood for great food served alongside craft beers, cocktails and live music, or Ayubowan Restaurant for authentic Sri Lankan cuisine.
